Staircase FAQs

Updated

Answers to the questions we are asked most about our space-saving, modular and spiral staircases.

Do you install staircases?

No. Every staircase comes with written and illustrated instructions, and our team can help with questions on the phone. Many customers use a local joiner or builder. Check Building Regulations for your project before you buy.

How much floor space will the staircase take up?

It depends on the floor-to-floor height. The technical drawing for each model (in its specification sheet) shows exactly how far it comes out from the wall. Steeper models such as the Deluxe Compact Paddle (63°) and the Mezzanine ladder (70°) take the least space.

Can I use it with a lower floor-to-floor height?

Yes. Space-saving staircases can be cut down, and spiral staircases are built with fewer treads.

Can I change the pitch?

No. The treads slot into rebated sides, so the angle is fixed. Modular staircases vary between 53° and 59° depending on how many treads you use.

Can I make a space-saving staircase narrower?

  • Deluxe Space Saving, Deluxe Extra Wide and Grand Space Saving: yes, cut the treads down. They are the same width at both ends.
  • Deluxe Compact Paddle, Grand with Quarter Turn and Mezzanine ladder: no.

Can the staircase be removable?

Yes, the Deluxe Space Saving and Deluxe Compact Paddle can be with the Bar & Hook Kit. It doesn't fit the wider models. The Mezzanine ladder hooks on and off as standard.

Can I have a turn in the staircase?

Modular staircases can have one turn, at the top or bottom, but not both. The Grand with Quarter Turn has its turn at the base only.

Are handrails included?

Yes, on space-saving and modular staircases. Extra handrails are available for the Grand Modular. The Mezzanine ladder can't take a handrail.

What are they made from? Can I paint them?

Space-saving staircases are spruce, which is more durable than pine. Modular staircases are varnished beech. Spruce models and the untreated Mezzanine ladder can be painted.

Spiral staircases: what do the extra baluster kits do?

They add a spindle to each tread and two to the landing step, reducing the gap between spindles. On the 1200mm Deluxe Spiral one kit brings the gap under 100mm; the 1400mm needs two kits.

Can a spiral staircase go into a round opening?

Yes. The top landing tread can be cut to suit a round opening. The instructions show how.

How do the outdoor spiral balustrade kits work?

Each pack gives 1m of handrail. Buy one starter pack, then extension packs for the length you need. For a banister on both sides of the top, you need two starter packs. The outdoor spiral can also be used indoors.
