Scaffold tower safety and wind guidance

Updated

Always read the instruction manual for your tower before putting it up. A risk assessment should be carried out before any work at height.

Wind

Industrial towers (3T, AGR, 8-Rung, Fold Out):

  • Above 7.7 m/s (17 mph), stop work and don't move the tower.
  • If the wind may reach 11.3 m/s (25 mph), tie the tower to a rigid structure.
  • If gale force (over 18 m/s / 40 mph) is likely, take the tower down.

Home Master DIY towers:

  • Stop work and don't move the tower above 20 km/h.
  • Tie it in if the wind may reach 31 km/h.
  • Take it down if it may go over 52 km/h.

Putting it up

  • Industrial towers should be put up by 2 people (the Stair Tower must be). The One Man Tower is designed for one person.
  • Only build on firm, level ground. Lock the castors.
  • Always fit outriggers or stabilisers when specified, set at about 45°.
  • Ballast, if needed, must be solid (not water or loose sand) and placed on the lowest rung.

Using it

  • Always climb on the inside of the tower, never the outside.
  • Don't use braces as steps, and never stand on boxes, ladders or other objects on the platform.
  • Adjustable legs are for levelling only, not for extra height.
  • Don't lean ladders against the tower or bridge between the tower and a building.
  • Don't go over the safe working load. Remember that tools and materials count.

Moving it

  • Never move a tower with people, tools or materials on it.
  • Industrial towers must be reduced to 4m or less before moving. Home Master towers above 5m working height must be taken down before moving.
  • Raise outriggers only enough to clear the ground (25mm maximum on industrial towers).
