Choose a step ladder by height, how often you'll use it, and what you'll use it for. For occasional jobs at home, a lightweight aluminium step is enough. For trade or daily use, choose a platform step rated to EN131 Professional. For electrical work, choose fibreglass.
1. Work out the height
You can reach about 2m above the step or platform you stand on. Subtract 2m from the height you need to reach to find the platform height you need.
2. Choose the type
- Compact step ladders: light and slim for home use.
- Platform step ladders: a large platform and handrail, so you can stand at the top and work more comfortably.
- Swingback (builders) steps: heavy-duty steps for site use.
- Podium steps: guardrails all round, for longer jobs.
- Combination, multi-purpose and tripod ladders: for stairs, uneven ground and multiple uses.
3. Choose the material
- Aluminium: lighter and won't rust.
- Fibreglass: heavier, but non-conductive. Essential near electricity.
4. Check the rating
EN131 for home use; EN131 Professional for trade and frequent use. Most of our steps are rated 150kg.
