How to use a ladder safely for DIY jobs

Updated

Most ladder accidents at home happen on short, simple jobs. Before you climb, choose the right ladder, check it, set it up properly and stay within reach.

Before you climb

  1. Choose the right ladder. A step ladder for indoor and low jobs; an extension ladder for gutters and upstairs windows; a combination or stair ladder for stairs. See Which ladder do I need?
  2. Check it. Look for bent or split stiles, loose rungs, worn feet and faulty locks.
  3. Check yourself. Wear flat, grippy shoes. Don't climb if you're tired, unwell, or have had alcohol or medication that affects balance.

Setting up

  • Stand the ladder on firm, level ground. Lock step ladder spreaders fully.
  • Set leaning ladders at 75° (1 out for every 4 up) and secure them.
  • Keep the area around the foot clear, and keep children and pets away.

Climbing and working

  • Face the ladder and keep three points of contact while climbing.
  • Carry tools in a belt or pouch, not in your hands.
  • Keep your belt buckle between the stiles. If you can't reach, climb down and move the ladder.
  • Only one person on the ladder at a time, and stay within its weight rating.
  • On a step ladder, don't stand on the top two steps (top three on swing-back steps) unless there is a handhold. Platform steps with a handrail are designed for you to stand on the platform.
