Can I paint the outside of my house without scaffolding?

Updated

Yes. For most two-storey houses you can paint safely with a DIY scaffold tower, or for short touch-ups, an extension ladder with a stand-off. Choose based on how long you will spend at height.

Which equipment to use

  • Scaffold tower: best for painting walls, fascias and window frames. You have a guarded platform, both hands free, and room for paint and tools. Our DIY towers reach up to 7m working height. See DIY and Trade Master scaffold towers.
  • Extension ladder: fine for short jobs, up to about 30 minutes in one position. Fit a stand-off so the ladder clears gutters and you can reach the wall.
  • Extension poles and rollers: reduce how much work you do at height.

Tips

  1. Measure the height you need to reach before choosing a tower or ladder.
  2. Check the weather. Don't use towers or ladders in high winds.
  3. Work from the top down, and move the tower or ladder rather than stretching.
  4. Keep paint tins in a hook or on the tower platform, not in your hand.
